If you’re ever in Zimbabwe, don’t miss the chance to take a swim in The Devil’s Pool, a small lagoon, enclosed by rocks, on the edge of one of the biggest, most beautiful waterfalls in the world, Victoria Falls. Set on Livingstone Island, at a height of 103 meters, Devil’s Pool is definitely one of the most surreal locations on Earth.

During the months of September and December, people can swim as close as possible to the edge of the falls without falling over.

Why the hell would I ever be in Zimbabwe?

  2. brian says:

I think that it might be possible that its not such a good idea to allow the children of Ms. Margret Boyle or the other people calling child protective servives (its Africa btw) near the waterfall as their children probably have never been exposed to anything dangerous and cant guage how to behave in any situation that involves risk. That being said, we can probably come to an agreement. How about we dont complain about your children not having the life skills to succesfully navigate through the real world (non virtual) without a helmet, and the rest of us will live life (non virtual) with ours.

  3. molly says:

been there and done that. it was amazing and exhilerating.

  4. DickPuller says:

    Terron.

“and your perspective is ill informed,”

Everyones entitled to there opinion , why the attitude . Its hardly a comparision driveing your kids to school to letting them within a few feet of a massive drop is it .
How are other peoples opinions ruining life for evryone…pmsl.. Its open for comments and debate or it would not be on the net .
Typical dummy out of the pram moment because someone has an opinion.

    Hugs xx

    Dick

  5. DickPuller says:

Brian , your comments are pants aswell !

So if we don,t allow our children to dangle near the edge of the devils pool they will be lacking in life skills to navigate in the real world , i think not !

Typical numb nutts smart arse comment when you havn,t seen the replies you would have liked .

  6. Normalyn says:

    looks dangerous….but fun too

  7. Anastasia says:

I’m in the middle here with Terron and the other opinions…

But on a happier note, Holy SH*T this is AWESOME! I am one of those people who loooooves the exhilaration of doing some as scary as that! I would do it any day!

-As for this other dicussion: You don’t need to put your children in some sort of immediate danger, but I just want to say that DON’T SHELTER YOUR CHILDREN! They will NEVER appreciate it. Ever. Never EVER. Am I clear on that? Yeah.. That’s never… Just saying. But by all means, if that seems like a bad idea don’t take ‘em there… Problem solved. Don’t be scared of such small things… Life is much too short.

  8. Ashlee says:

Way to go dick….i like your comments. hehehe

  11. michael Walton says:

Margaret Boyle, GRILLirious, and others who chose to make life decisions based on fear might benefit from some life experience. Children raised to fear the world have poor coping strategies, which quickly develop into social and psychological deficits. Children taught to enjoy this beautiful and brief life without fear develop into happier and healthier adults. This correlation is supported by all current scientific psychological research. Perception becomes reality.

  12. vjwpf says:

Absolutely looks beautiful! I have always wanted to travel to Zimbabwe and other surrounding African nations to see the nature and the reality of state, and I hope that I will one day soon!

  13. Jackie Izso says:

Duuude! I so want to be there. As for this whole argument about child safety…lets get over it. Annoyinggggggggg!

  14. Dantk says:

Also you will note that all of the kids in these photos are under very close watch by a parent. Throwing your kids in and leaving to go have a smoke, well that’s a different story. But yes kids should be exposed to what I call “safe danger” in that this is dangerous if you don’t play it safe. If you teach your child to fear everything, then they will end up fearing everything and won’t become productive members of society.

  15. Catherine says:

I remember visiting Vic Falls often as a child, but never experienced this. Will definitely go back one day to do this…looks exhilarating!! :)

  16. DickPuller says:

So its safe then is it . Do a google search on it . At least one person a year dies there .

    http://en.afrik.com/article16222.html

cut and paste if the link doesnt work .

I,ll take the risk of my kids growing up without “life style skills” and if they need to grow up without fear so they don,t have ” poor coping strategies, which quickly develop into social and psychological deficits.” ( whats that smell ) errr…i think i,ll take the risk .

Wrapping them up in cotton wool is one thing , putting them in unecessary danger is another !

yea guys chill out and just accept the awesomeness!

  18. Kikolani says:

I don’t think I would ever let my kids in there, just like I wouldn’t let them stand on the edge of the rooftop of a tall building. I just wouldn’t take the chance. As an adult… I might do it though.

  19. Ileene Marcuse says:

funny how looking at this wonderful natural phenomena people want to create drama by exerting their opinion what other people do with their own children. I’ve found many times that people who JUDGE other parents, DON”T have any of their own…chill

  20. Ooklamok says:

One person a year dies there.

    One.

So, you don’t drive then, right?

  21. DickPuller says:

Did you read the link ?

    http://en.afrik.com/article16222.html

And does this really look safe to you ?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVN9KnWy-H8&feature=player_embedded

A wonderful natural phenomena it is , a real playground for radical tourists seeking the ultimate thrill …a childrens playground it is not . Not judgeing anyones parenting skills , its up to them to do what they percieve as good parenting .

The FACTS are though , people have died ,haveing the ultimate thrill / experience etc . Yes its there life , there family , but lets get real , its not the safest thing to do on your hols is it ..lol..

    Chill on that .

“Yes its there life , there family”

. . . I think you meant THEIR LIFE, THEIR FAMILY. Your choice of spelling indicates a position, where as the one I’ve suggested indicates posession.

  30. Clifford Hepplethwaite says:

Thats an amazing place! Make sure you visit the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls as well. The view is better. Really beautiful

  31. dave says:

I have reported this. It should be filled in in the next few business days,

  32. Steve says:

If your child is dumb enough to fall over the edge, he deserves to be removed from the gene pool anyway.

  33. Eh? says:

As long as they’re american tourists who are dying, who really cares?

  36. Flokk says:

WTF…they allow these kids to risk their lives @ this waterfall…Am I supposed to follow this…

  37. riddlywalker says:

yes- let’s prop up a country that’s starving half it’s population, excecuting the political opposition and run by a looney with a hitler moustache. Let’s go, one of the greatest countries in Africa, fucked by a dictator who cares damn all for his people, while the world says tut, tut,…………

  38. anymouse says:

who cares about the kids…parents can always make more!

  39. debra says:

what happens when you swim around the time of, oh let’s say may and july?

  40. markus says:

Meh. Judging by the pictures there are obviously ways for kids to enjoy the view and swim out to the edge while still being safe. Looks like you kinda have to climb out to fall over anyway, so the danger would be more or less akin to falling out of a swimming pool. Looks like fun. thanks for the pics.

  41. paul says:

Wow those parents gave their young children less than a centimeter of personal space near a perilous drop. The children could have slipped away! Next thing you know, the kids will take up drugs and prostitution.

  42. Tony says:

That must be one heck of an experience, but with my fear of heights, I’m not about to consider a trip to Zimbabwe.

  43. Andrew says:

Pity that dictator Mugabe and his cronies still have a stranglehold on the people of Zimbabwe.

I’d be more worried about the danger of a Mugabe thug shooting you up than a kid going over the edge here.

No way I will go visit while the smell of Mugabe and his corrupt wife and other corrupt members of his court are still in power.

  44. Eliza says:

I would just like to point out that you are having a discussion based on nothing to do with the pool. I’m enjoying how very cool this looks to visit. So go argue how to raise children elsewhere you morons.

  45. Jason says:

    Jane..you ignorant slut!

  46. Johnny says:

    Waterfalls are cool. Enough said.

  47. above450 says:

It’s funny how something as beautiful as this can be turned into an arguement. There are 50-80 shark attacks per year and you are obsessing over one person dying every year from this waterfall. I’m surprised there aren’t more idiots who decide to walk over the wall, but one really isn’t that bad. So if there are 50+ shark attacks a year, does that mean you won’t take your children into the ocean anymore? Anyway, I think people should be much less cynical and should probably stop acting like the children they are being overly protective of.

  48. Mat says:

Zimbabwean (and majority of African) health and safety pretty much comes down to this. “If you will die because of your actions, or hurt others by doing so, then don’t do it!”

No need to take into account the most ignorant, imbecilic, and god fearing moron who decides to act silly-buggers. You don’t wanna die, don’t be a moron!

Now that that is out of the system, I lived in the country for 20 years and never heard of this. Now that I have, where do I sign up?! I visited Vic Falls once and they didn’t exactly market the idea. However i did go in May though, so it could be seasonal.

If anything, go for the view, then go for this! It looks amazing and really brings a sense of how finite we really are!
