NEW ZEALAND
The Antipodean islands have long been regarded as one of the best places to live. New Zealand has always been near the top of the Global Peace Index. The 2009 Global Peace Index ranks New Zealand as the safest country to live in.
The survey gives New Zealand a very low score on the likelihood of violence and violent crimes. Its also scores very low on hostility to foreigners.
The survey ranked countires on various criteria and their countire with the lowset scores were considered the safest to live in.
DENMARK & NORWAY
Denmark and Norway score the same on the Global Peace Index. Both the Scandinavian countries are ranked at the second spot in the index.
Both countries score very well in human rights and political stability. They also have the lowest scores on gender inequality.
ICELAND, AUSTRIA & SWEDEN
Iceland is ranked fourth in the global peace Index. Iceland scores very high in literacy and civil liberties.
Austria is placed fifth in the rankings. Austria scores very highly on democracy and education.
Sweden is placed sixth in the rankings. The Scandinavian coutries dominate the top of the rankings and have similar scores on all fronts.
JAPAN
Japan, the highest ranked Asian country, is ranked seventh. Japan scores very low on military expenditure and number of armed service personnel.
CANADA
Canada is the only North American country to figure in the top 10. Canada, which holds the eighth slot, has the highest percentage of women in Parliament in the Americas. Finland is ranked ninth on the survey.
Slovenia is ranked tenth by the index.
QATAR
Oman is ranked twenty-first in the rankings. Both Oman and Qatar score high on relations with neighbouring countries. They are the highest ranked Arab countries in the survey.
Oman and Qatar are constitutional monarchies and form part of strife-torn Middle-East.
AUSTRALIA
Australia is ranked 19th by the index. Australia has been in the news recently for racist attacks on Indian students, but a relaxed immigration procedure and positive human development indicators make it an attractive country to live in.
Switzerland is ranked 18th in the survey.
Chile is ranked 20th in the survey. It is the highest ranking South American country.
BHUTAN
Bhutan is the highest ranking South Asian country. It occupies the 40th slot. The country that coined the concept of gross national happiness does well on human rights and boasts of low levels of violent crimes.
CHINA
The world’s most populous nation, China is ranked at 74th by the index. While the Communist nation scores low on political rights and human rights, its does well on the development indicators and material well being.
However, hosting the Olympics in 2008 hasn’t helped the country as China slid five places from last year’s index.
NEPAL
The Himalayan nation went through political turmoil last year with the monarchy being abolished and an elected Communist government taking over.
The political instability in the country continued following the hung Parliament. However, Nepal’s human development indicators have improved vastly in the last three years.
KUWAIT
In the most unstable neighbourhood in the world, Kuwait is an oasis of calm, and is ranked 42nd by the index. Considering that Iraq, the most dangerous place to live in the world, borders Kuwait, this achievement is no mean feat.
Kuwait is regarded as one the most progressive Arab states and scores high in education and material well-being.

The top countries featured above are all safe and pleasant to visit. Most have small populations. Denmark is delightful. Rachael asks why the USA is not in the list. How could it be with massive gun ownership and high violent crime? That’s just what these other countries don’t have!

hi there! i agree that singapore should, absolutely, be on this list! it is an amazing place to visit and/or live in! it has a very interesting history and one can travel to lots of places from there also…. fiji, australia, indonesia, bali, malaysia – just to name a few. singaporeans, are amongs the most courteous pple i’ve met. nepal, however, is a hot mess, and is not a safe place whatsoever. who on eath would recommend this country as one of the safest??? it is, indeed, one of the most beautiful, complex and interesting countries… but safe??? i think not.

With 4.2 million people how can that be comparable to countries that have more than one city with more than 1 million people in each city.

Lol Jollyjumper. At my school in Australia, 50% of the population in my grade are kiwi. It’s quite good though they teach the maouri language to me. I visited NZ and thought it was a great country, people there are so friendly. Australia is becoming a hell hole, wouldn’t mind living in NZ.

Singapore should be on the list, it’s very safe and has a very low crime rate and it has the lowest crime rate in the world, i wonder why they didn’t mention which is the safest country in Africa, in my opinnion it would have to be Botswana as it is much more peaceful and much more stable then all the other African countries particuarly all the other sub saharan African countries and its crime rate and particularly it’s murder rate is lower then all the other sub saharan African countries.

been out of the country put it down, These people need to live overseas to see Its not

I personally think Ireland should be on this list. My friend went to visit, and he says the people there are very friendly. Why do people say that singapore should be on this list. Did you know that if you do so much as litter, you could be caned in public?
@Ronny. Ive lived in Singapore my whole life. There is no such action that one does in Singapore that will lead to public caning. Yes the punishment for littering is very strict, but not public caning. Just a very very heavy fine and community service. And Btw, all canings are done in Changi Prison.

Police state?! What the hell are you talking about?! The policing system is relaxed, if anything!
Boring and dull?! You obviously don’t leave the house very much – or is it boring because you don’t see New Zealand civil wars/multiple mass murders on the evening news here in NZ, like you do in other countries? NZ is a country where a car accident is the number one news item.

Sorry Jollyjumper, I recently moved to NZ, what a place! I came from South Africa, love the country, but the crime, oh boy! I don’t want my kids to grow up there anymore, you don’t know if you are going to see them again when you said your goodbyes in the morning, you are not safe in you own house, you have to live in a jail 24/7, to make sure other people don’t intrude. Is that a life? Moved to NZ, now this is a life, don’t need to look over my shoulder every 2 minutes, my kids can go and play in the park they can go to the beach. NZ ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!

If this list is made up from information that is provided by the media then it is is most biased. Media always sensationalizes its stories & in some countries is censored by some government department. Further review of the ‘attacks’ on Indians in Australia would have revealed that the bashings and burnings was done by Indians to each other. With very few being subjected to racist slurs no worse than is said about your football team. No i do not condone racism.

NZ is very safe as well (well, the majority is).

The world is full of people. No matter how many there are in your village,city,country there is always going to be difference’s this will always be a issue when it comes to safety. So my thoughts are spend some time making where ever you a little better and with that things will become safer. As for NZL its a young country with a young culture New Zealanders should use this to there advantage and learn from some of these older cultures. I think NZL is a great place but have had more crime events when living there than I have living on the USA.

SINGAPORE said to be safe because its a small country where its easy to control the law here as its illegal to carry or keep a firearms etc and with their 1000 rules and regulations too.
I’m sure that countries with most population out there is fighting hard to keep their country name clean.
