Basenjis are far more intelligent than this states. They ARE independent which is why they are not easy to train, they get bored with repetitive actions and I have personally seen a basenji in obedience leave his owner who is standing in the sun on a day when midday temps were over 95°F., and walk into the shade and lie down and remain there.
To me this shows the dog has more intelligence than the owner.
I've owned many basenjis over 4 decades and have had escape artists that could get out of any inclosure, seemingly by magic. I had one that would open the dishwasher door to make it easier to get up onto the kitchen counter and I had to velcro the fridge door with a strap to keep her out of it.
The thing is that basenjis train their owners, not the other way around.
